Nothing happened that day, and that was a bad sign. What I’d done was a serious infraction of the rules, as well as a direct slap in the Major’s face, and I knew I was in deep trouble. There’d been an increasing number of incidents since Christmas, however, and in order to prove to Captain Yoshishito that he wasn’t (despite appearances) losing control of the situation, the Major decided to teach us all a lesson, once and for all, by making an example out of me.

Everyone was assembled the following morning before breakfast. The Major, whose duty it was to preside over disciplinary matters, marched in front of us with the ranking British NCO, Sgt. Major Goodhall, at his side. Captain Yoshishito, accompanied by his junior officers, joined the Major, but I still didn’t know what to expect. Then the Japanese guards pulled me out of ranks, stripped me naked, tied my hands behind my back, tied my ankles together, and tied a bandana across my mouth. Immediately my hands and feet began to swell and I started to suffocate. A Filipino interpreter was brought forward and I was informed that I would have to stand there at attention until sundown. Ten hours away. I was told that if I fainted or fell to the ground, I was finished. Dead.

The British junior officers had braced themselves for the inevitable and were cautiously avoiding my gaze. The Japanese appeared very serious, as usual. Behind me I heard grumblings from my comrades and my heart leaped into my throat. I looked at Duff for reassurance, but there was no offer of hope, only rage and anger in his face. I retreated within myself, cleared my mind of fear, and waited for the fun to begin.
